Good eye, Dan. That's the cinder block. Here's the full inventory of what they hauled up:

" . . . a small Fortress anchor, a very, very, very large Navy type anchor not visible in this photo, a cinder block, two sizes of polypro line, four sizes of dacron line, two sizes of chain, a large U-shaped steel bar, plus a lot of barnacles."

Here's a Maptech image of the area, but unfortunately it doesn't show water depths. It's clear from the steep terrain of the island leading down to the water, though, that it drops off quickly. Remember, Dag, this is the Pacific, not the Bahamas.

I would agree, Mark, but I did note that it took them three hours to bring that mess up, so the strain on the windlass had to be significant. For the record, Profligate is a 63' catamaran, and it carries a Fortress FX125 (the biggest one they make), and I'm sure the windlass is sized accordingly.
