Catch of the Day . . .

Today's Photo of the Day in 'Lectronic Latitude is both funny and pathetic:

"Photo of the Day

"September 12 - Cat Harbor

(Click on the
photo to enlarge it.)
"Most of these goodies, including the two anchors, are in about 120 feet of water at the mouth of Cat Harbor. Tony can show you where.

"Today's Photo of the Day, by Rachel Edwards, is actually a request for stories of the most stuff hauled up from the bottom in one raising of an anchor. When we tried to leave Cat Harbor recently . . . "

So then waht? They cut it all lose and dropped it back in the water?

Seriously what do you do? Haul it away with you? It even looks like a hollow brick in there.

Who'd anchor in 120 feet of water?

A burning desire to haul up 500 feet of chain?

Good eye, Dan. That's the cinder block. Here's the full inventory of what they hauled up:

" . . . a small Fortress anchor, a very, very, very large Navy type anchor not visible in this photo, a cinder block, two sizes of polypro line, four sizes of dacron line, two sizes of chain, a large U-shaped steel bar, plus a lot of barnacles."

Here's a Maptech image of the area, but unfortunately it doesn't show water depths. It's clear from the steep terrain of the island leading down to the water, though, that it drops off quickly. Remember, Dag, this is the Pacific, not the Bahamas.

PS: Sorry for the absence of the Maptech image. In the words of Old Lodgeskins in Little Big Man, "Sometimes the magic works, sometimes it doesn't."

I want the windlass they used to haul all that up on my boat! Gotta be a strong unit!

I would agree, Mark, but I did note that it took them three hours to bring that mess up, so the strain on the windlass had to be significant. For the record, Profligate is a 63' catamaran, and it carries a Fortress FX125 (the biggest one they make), and I'm sure the windlass is sized accordingly.
