Been to Port Lewis Marina, Grenada ?

Going to do the summer there. Anyone have any local knowledge? I will be looking for someone to look in on my boat on occasion. Anyone have any experiences, good or bad, there?

Regards,

Mike

Nothing? Anybody?

How about St Georges? Any advice on that area?

Thanks CF!

Re: Port Lewis Marina Grenada, Been there?

We anchored off Hog Island down on the south end of Granada. There were maybe a dozen boats anchored there, all long-term cruisers. They were very friendly and invited us to join in there activities. Dinner at the Big Fish on Friday night, and drinks/snacks/dinner at Roger's beach bar on Wednesday and Sunday. A couple of the guys played guitars, and an Englishman played his penny whistle. Quite fun!

We did take a mini-bus from Woburn into St Georges to look around and do some shopping, but our personal preference is to stay away from marinas and urban anchorages. The Camper Nicholsons marinas tend to cater to the mega-yachts, so you might want to contact them and ask their transient rates.

Re: Port Lewis Marina Grenada, Been there?

I haul my boat in Grenada during the summer but I know of some who have been at Port Louis not Lewis Marina. It is very upscale tending to cater to larger yachts. They have spent a heckof a lot money and so far I do not see very many customers.

St. Georges is a pleasant city surrounding the Carenage and Lagoon. The marina has water rights to most of the Lagoon. If you are going to be absent it or Clarks Court Bay marina make the most sense.

If you are going to be onboard then Hud's comments about Hog Island are definately right on. It is one of my favourite anchorages behind a reef so it is calm but gets enough breeze to be cool. It is close to Prickley Bay which is the centre for services in Grenada.

Re: Been to Port Lewis Marina, Grenada ?

We spent one night in the marina on a charter in August 2010. No mega yachts and very few other charterers, mostly appeared to be cruisers/liveaboards. Pleasant enough marina but with a slightly unfinished feel. I suspect it will be busy with mega yachts and charterers in winter, but in summer much more relaxed.

Great access by dinghy across the "Carenage" to the heart of the town - a real Caribbean city, seemingly unspoiled by tourism with the exception of the dreadful cruise ship dock and shopping mall.

Unnattended camera "walked" from the bar/restaurant as we wandered around the marina for 10 minutes, but our fault, could happen anywhere. Good to see a scammer (he was "raising funds for a local school") very quickly escorted off the premises by security. We were compensated by a (good honest value) trip around the island in the air conditioned minibus/taxi of Keith - a true gentleman and good company for the day - ask for him (he will be known by marina staff), you will be pleased you did!

Enjoy!

Re: Been to Port Lewis Marina, Grenada ?

One further thought (re having boat attended) - I have read on here adverse reports regarding one service company in Grenada. We chartered with Horizon, from True Blue, who have an office in Port Louis.

Not sure if they offer such a service, but from my experience of 6 different charter companies Horizon were way ahead of the others in terms of service and boat maintenance.

Re: Been to Port Lewis Marina, Grenada ?

We are on our way to Port Louis Marina now - currently in St. Martin on our way from Florida. We have arranged a dockage (at a great rate I think) and plan to stay there from July to December. Ron is an experienced and licensed Captain/Boat builder and I'm sure if you have any interest in him looking out for your boat, that could be arranged - seems we will be neighbors. Our email is svmollybloom at gmail dot com if you would like to correspond directly.
When do you plan to get there? Will you be staying on your boat at all while there? I am very excited to know that someone else is going to be there as well - it seems very nice and everyone I have spoken to, who has seen it is impressed. The rate they quoted us for our 37' catamaran is very good. Marie

Re: Been to Port Lewis Marina, Grenada ?

Port Louis is great. Our boat is there now while we're traveling in the states. Can't wait to get back to Grenada.

We've been spending hurricanes season there for years -- it's truly a wonderful island. Normally, we stay at anchor right outside St. George's entrance, as we like the breeze and clear water to be found out there, and the convenience to town. St. George's is a little harder to reach from the more popular south coast anchorages, although the bus service is good.

Re: Been to Port Lewis Marina, Grenada ?

Our Boat is Molly Bloom - a 37' sail lagoon catamaran and we do plan to be there sometime in June. We are staying aboard and will be at the Port Louis Marina - I'm looking forward to meeting Danny - he has been so accomodating so far.
When do you plan to return?

We should be back in late June. We'll be eager to get the boat back out in the open, but we should be in the marina until the end of the month, and then just outside off Pandey beach.
