Anchor alarm apps. What connectivity is required?

I want to get an anchor alarm app for my iPad. It doesn't have a celluar capability, only wifi. It's not clear to me how the apps access the boat's location without some type of cellular or wifi access or do they? I have a Raymarine 125 chartplotter which can display the screen on my iPad via it's own wifi. Do these anchor alarm apps work when you are in a location without access to wifi or celluar?

thanks!

To use your Ipad, your going to have to tell it where it is, for that I use a Bluetooth GPS "puck", just make sure it's for use with an Apple product, most are not.
But for anchor apps, I use my cell phone as it has a built in GPS, but the Ipad with Garmin blue charts is an excellent standby plotter, as is the phone, just the Ipad is easier to see.

All of the apps require a GPS input, so if you have only the wifi iPad, you do not have an internal GPS in it. The only way it would work for you is to use an external GPS over bluetooth or wifi. I don't know if your chart plotter will do this.

Set the alarm on the device that has gps built-in. Otherwise there are too (?) many elements that can go wrong: the gps, the wifi or BT bridge, the app, the mobile device.

Keep it simple.

Or, get a basic smart phone or tablet that has built in GPS. My Samsung Pocket phone does. No connectivity of any kind required. I run My Anchor Watch. Take it to bed with me and the battery easily lasts the night.

The answer to your question can be found here on the Raymarine Technical Formum.

Re: Anchor alarm apps. What connectivity is required?

Your Raymarine 125 incorporates a drift alarm that works off the gps and works fine. Why aren't you using yours? Battery drain? I also put on the TWS wind alarm as I like to be woken when winds hit a certain speed. Though I often wake from the passing wind noise before the alarm goes off.

As noted above, newer iPads with both 3G/4G/wifi have built-in gps and can run anchor alarm apps. We have one and have used it occasionally and seems to work fine.

Re: Anchor alarm apps. What connectivity is required?

Many years ago (maybe in 2010) I bought an Ipad first version with GPS and 64 GB of memory but with no sim card no camera. It was only to work as a plotter, and it is working find till this day.
This will also work with an anchor alarm app. And if you sleep next to the ipad you do not need any connection. If you want the alarm to be sent to an other phone, then you will need some form of connection.

Re: Anchor alarm apps. What connectivity is required?

I use a "Bad Elf" external GPS on my iPad, primarily to run Navionics ( which I think is one of the best things I own BTW). I paid about $100 for it ( the Bad Elf) on Amazon. You can then run any app that requires GPS on your iPad. My only caution is that it attaches through your power inlet so you have to take care with it. Even if you have a sturdy case for your iPad, it's connection is fragile. I've not had a problem (yet) even though I frequently use it in the cockpit.
