Re: Zodiac Registration yes or no

Pelagic,

Our boat is US registered. While in Qld. (Queensland, Australia), we were stopped, and told that the dinghy with its 15 hp o/b had to be registered, which was correct for Queensland, if the boat was Australian registered (which requires Australian citizenship). However, since the dinghy is clearly marked as a tender to a foreign registered vessel, it
is actually outside their jurisdiction. They don't like it, but eventually they "got it." The incident occurred prior to 9/11. Haven't been bothered much lately.

Were you using it more than 2NM from the parent vessel? What were you using it for?

"Tenders to registered recreational ships are exempt from registration if they are only used within 2 nautical miles of the parent ship and the tender is being used to transport people or provisions between the ship and the shore. This does not include fishing or sightseeing activities."

If used outside those parameters, the fact that the mothership was foreign registered becomes irrelevant. It would need to be registered since it ceases to be regarded as a tender.

When visiting Qld, you do need to be careful about what you use your unregistered tender for

No sail, no motor; so no registration or numbering in California.
