I tied a 3/8" line to the end of my chain that is long enough to go out the Hause pipe. also on the end of the line that is attached to the chian I leave an additional 3' or 4' of line. The reason I put this extra bit on the chain is so that I can tie an orange fisherman's bumper (which I have not purchased yet) to the end of the chain so that if I have to dump 300' of chain and an anchor I can come back and hopefully find the chian.

I saw a guy put a hole in his deck that way.

You may have a solid glass deck, but he had a thin cored deal and was backing down too fast.

I use 100 feet of 1/2" yellow polypropylene line, at the bitter emd of the chain rode to act as the cushion for the chain against the hull. If it runs out to its max, it can still be retrieved with the windlass. If it needs to be cut in a hurry, it leaves a very long floating "tail" for you to find when you return to salvage the chain and hook.
