Storing Scuba Tanks On Deck

I'm looking for a safe way to store two scuba tanks on deck while underway. Does anyone have experience whith this? We are aboard a 42' ketch. Putting them in the dinghy is not an option.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I keep 2 hp120's in the cockpit lockers. I have enough stuff stuffed in them to keep them from rolling around. I did see a boat where he had two tanks in half racks bungied to the mast. It looked very wrong to me. I would not be very comfortable with tanks on deck should they break loose, you can only hope they simply go over the side and not become a deadly projectile.

I know it doesn't help but good luck

Send a message via ICQ to sail2wind
Tank racks are available at all dive shops, very inexpensive and secure.

I saw a Colvin with PVC (8"?) pieces that he had grooved in the front and secured upright to his stern pulpit with C clamps. He drilled the tops of the PVC and had bungy cord keepers as insurance. It looked good and was very secure.

That actually sounds pretty good.

He drilled a hole through the bottom (picture a diameter line) of the PVC and had a threaded rod going through so the tanks weren't actually sitting on the deck, and they were very secure. He had five tanks up on a little fantail and said they had never come free. It wouldn't work on my boat, but it was a pretty cool (and very cost effective) idea that worked well and looked great.
