Second hand sail

My dimensions of broken sail are
Luff 12.2
Leech 11.8
Foot 6.
All in meters.

They are offering me
12.7x10.6x5
12.3x11.9x4.45

What difference can make to sail one or the other?

What boat? Which sail? Looks like a headsail or an awesomely large spritsail

I my see that the sails they are offering are having much smaller sailing area. But then what are the difference in sailing carecteristic. Will I lose a lot?

The big difference will be fore-aft sheet position. Do you have a lot of latitude?

It would seem like the second sail they offer is an almost exact fit for your luff, and could fit in your wardrobe as a #2 genoa. Does it actually fit? Looking at the diagram that Spot created (nice!) it seems like the luff/foot angle almost matches your old sail, so it might set very well with your existing sheets and jib cars. Besides being smaller than the #1 genoa that broke, the cut of the replacement sail will affect how it performs for you. If it was designed for a light boat that sailed mostly in smooth water it may be too flat to perform well for your heavy boat. A sail that was designed to move a heavy boat would likely work better for you. What kind of boat is the replacement sail from? Of course, if it is really old and blown out of shape, it may not be much good upwind, but still be better than nothing.

The fore-aft sheeting location will change a lot with choice #1. As Spot said, #2 will fit better, since the fore-aft position will be more similar.



This is just a rule-of-thumb, but it should help understand the thinking. It is about balancing tension between the foot and leach to get the right amount of camber and twist.

A useful test that you can perform to check headsail fit:

Make up a "triangle" of light line with edges the same lengths as the prospect sail.

Make a small loop at each "corner", ie simulating head, tack and clew.

Hoist it up the forestay with the "tack" in the normal tack position.

Then tie a sheet into the "clew" and see if you can sheet it to your normal lead position.

If you can get all three sides (luff, foot and leach) tight at t he same time, the sail will fit normally. If not, try moving the clew about until all the sides are taught. If you can get your sheet lead to that place, the sail will still be trimable, if not then don't buy it!
