When I read about a 120% light jib is that meant to be sized larger than the recommended jib for that boat? Is the number a percentage of the normal or manufactures part(sail) number? Let's say the sailboat has a 100 sq in jib, would I then put on a 120% larger jib to move the boat faster or move the boat in less wind?
There sure is a lot to learn in sailboats. I just passed my extra amateur radio license and thought they had lots of technical terms but you guys in sailboats have lots more but I'm ready for the challenge.

If the fore triangle is 200 sq. ft. and the sail is 200 sq ft that's 100% jib. A sail that is 25% bigger is a 125% etc and on and on.

OK I get it. Now is the jib the only sail that's usually increased?

The larger the jib, the lighter the wind to maintain speed.

Usually the main can only be shortened, except for pure bred racing boats which will have mainsails of larger size.

Headsails are often referred to by their size as a percentage of the foretriangle; that is, the triangle formed by the mast (I), the forestay, and the deck (J).

Thus, a 120 percent jib would have an area 20 percent greater than that of the foretriangle.

Foretriangle Area = (I x J) ÷ 2

The I dimension is defined as the vertical height in feet of the foretriangle (from the deck, not the cabin top), and J is the horizontal distance in feet from the mast to the root of the forestay.
