Sail Makers in Sarrasota: Recommendations, Please

I am getting a new main made and will someone come back with a recommendation for Porpoise Sails in Sarasota, FL. I have a quote from them and can't find anyone who has done business with them. (this type of question may not be in line with the forum rules, if not I apologise, I just need some input before pulling the trigger on the sail) Thanx

Re: sail makers

I'm in Florida and have not heard of Porpoise either. Do they make the sails on site or are they farmed out?

You might try Mack Sails. Been around for over 30 years in FL. Make the sails in their own loft. Good service and prices are competitive with the quote I got from Asia.

Re: sail makers

There are a number of hybrid sail makers that farm out the basic sail making but do the ordering and fitting. It's nice to get the sails fitted properly and any details with the rig straight when adding new sails. Here there is a great North Sails office that does this.

Welcome to the forum.

If it were me, I would not hesitate to ask the loft for references. I recently had a jib built by a loft that was new to me, and when I asked him for a quote I also asked whether he'd built sails for anyone in my yacht club. He had, and was happy to give me names.
