Replacement Emergency Tiller?

Bought a 1980's O'Day and it has a helm with an emergency tiller insert, however, I can not locate the emergency tiller. Does anyone know if the sell these, I've googled with ill results.

I would guess its a custom fabrication job. I need one too and can't find much info about it. Think I am just going to make one out of stainless....

Should be pretty simple to have the metal head fabbed up and make the wooden handle yourself. Lost steering on a CT 41 delivery during a bad storm off Pt Conception in the early 80's and found the emergency tiller lashed to underside of the cockpit sole, rusted in place and had to hack saw it out but after filing off the rust, the head fitted into the emergency fitting fine. You guys should go together and have a couple built or maybe 4 and put the others on e-Bay or on CF classified.

Before you fabricate a new one, you might contact someone who has the same model boat and ask where they were stored out of the factory. Sometimes you'll find them in clamps on the top of a lazarette--the sort of place you might not be looking.

You'll need to be a bit more specific than "1980's O'Day." What particular model are you talking about?

I think what I'm going to do is fabricate one much like I've seen videos of. Most people are making a vertical tiller with a "T" so you can turn it that way, the reason for this is because the HELM is so close to the emergency tiller connection. Appreciate the responses....

I would think you could do the following, not knowing the size of the (generally square) terminus of the tiller head on your specific boat.

1) Get a socket with a 1/2 inch or a 3/4 inch mount hole
2) Get a breaker bar to fit said socket.
3) Get a PVC pipe length to fit the breaker bar.
4) Thru-drill cotter pin holes as needed.

The benefits are that all this can break down to the length of the longest piece (maybe 18 inches) and if you drill carefully, you won't impair the use of the breaker bar and socket for their original purpose.

After all, it's an EMERGENCY tiller...you can deal with it being a little short and sloppy, right?
