Mast Stepping Along the Erie Canal

I've read elsewhere several negative comments about Wardell's in Tonawanda, NY. Are there any alternatives to them in the Buffalo area for unstepping before the Erie?

Paul

Can you point me to the great loop forum?

I read the comments here before posting. Not much. I've read a few on Active Captain that were pretty negative. I've read elsewhere, but can't remember where, several other negative comments.

Anyway, the main thrust of my question: are there alternatives?

Buffalo mast stepping

Hello, well your concern at Buffalo is not unfounded. Most people have their fair share of good an bad experiences at the Buffalo end, but unfortunately there is no one marina that everyone thinks is great.

Below I have listed the main options and contact numbers. Most people are unsatisfied by either the service (poor job done) or the bill (more than what you were expecting). Call each yard and ask for a grand total with tax. Most places charge by the foot, and some then add other fees and surcharges for cradles, antennas, radars, etc....This will prevent the unexpected bill portion of the problem.

Western End (Buffalo)
  • Wardell Boat Yard, North Tonawanda, NY; 716-692-9428
  • Smith Boys Inc., North Tonawanda, NY; 716-695-3472
  • Rich Marine Sales, Inc., Buffalo, NY; 716-873-4060
  • RCR Yachts, Buffalo, NY; 716-856-6314
Between the four (ignoring the $$ which you should know ahead of the time), I have heard good an bad stories for each. I guess it depends on who is working and any pressure to get you done quickly.

The eastern end is much more "friendly", as there are three options, DIY cheap and two private marinas. Both marinas are good choices (if you want to pay for others to do it), or just use the DIY pole for ~$50 at Castleton Boat Club to save some money.

If you want to make the 20 mile crossing to Port Colborne, Marlon's Marina there is good - they'll provide a 'cherry picker' to support the mast while you step/unstep it, price is about $75 as I recall.
