chain stopper

I am considering putting a chain stopper on my boat. I bought a Lewmar chain stopper that would be placed between the anchor and the windlass to prevent accidental deployment and to prevent any pull on the windlass when it is engaged. I have about 4 feet between the end of the anchor and the windlass. I am wondering on how the chain stopper will affect the direction of the chain when the shaft of the anchor comes up into the anchor roller. Do I want to place the chain stopper closer to the windlass or closer to the roller?

Re: chain stopper

We put ours about halfway and had to put it on a raised block to keep the chain running in the same plane. Seems to work well, but we also always use a snubber so it isn't much tested.

Re: chain stopper

The use of a snubber and/or a bridle also helps with lowering the entry point of the catenary and of course with shock loading. The windlass should never actually hold the chain once set, and in my view the chain hook should not take the whole load. That load should be shared between hook and snubber or hook and bridle.
