C&C 37 Plus Chainplate Repair

Yesterday I disassembled the port backstay chainplate. What I found was most disappointing. This "chainplate" was nothing but a 3/8 u bolt with a ground down aluminum strap between the u bolt legs. What a terrible disappointment in the construction of C&C yachts. Worse yet is the deep crack into the laminate next to where the u bolt started to pull though the deck. My faith in C&C has been badly shaken.
The repair options are 2. First is build up the inside of the transom with epoxy & use a substantial backing plate. The second option is more radical. that would be to through bolt a standard chain plate to the outside of the transom with a matching backing plate. The first choice has a cosmetic advantage. The second option has a structural advantage. Does anyone have another idea?

the thru bolting of a strap sounds like a good idea to me .. that's what the builder did with my boat.

To stabilize deep crack in laminate, do you have to reinforce/build up inside ? ...
and then thru bolt with matching plates in and out...and then inspect/disassemble
starboard backstay.
