How often to replace Dickinson stone fuel filter in diesel pot heater?

I have a pot-style diesel heater which uses the recommended stone fuel filter element. Does anyone know how often to replace this, and how you would even tell if it is overdue for replacement? Our heater seems to be working fine - if the fuel filter were dirty would we get inconsistent metering or something?

I imagine the replacement schedule should be based on hours of heater use and/or volume of diesel flowing through it. Ours is going on 5 years but we only use it about 100 hours per year which equates to about 5 gallons diesel/year.

Here's a link to the filter housing (and I attached a pic of the stone element):

Why not ask the folks at Dickinson? They've been very responsive in the past.

I would suggest no replacement needed as long as fuel starts filling bowl (part of the lighting process is to open meter so than a small amount of fuel fills bowl). We've had ours for 13 years (and previous owner before) with no change of this filter.
