Head Poll - what type do you have?
In an effort to answer my own question, I’m posting this poll regarding current head installations. It’s far from scientific or definitive, but it will be interesting to see the percentages.
It would be interesting to hear why people chose the system they did, but please try and refrain from using this as a thread to fight about which system is best. We can fight elsewhere .
BTW, as a comparison, I did find this older poll here on CF. It’s not quite the same question, but does provide possible comparison numbers from five years ago: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post1407824

Re: Head Poll - what type do you have?
Interesting question, Mike. Considering the various types of users on this forum, may I suggest a follow-up question - what type of sailor are you? Most recreational production boats (except former BVI charters) came with a Type III, so there was some thought and expense if that's not still what people have.

Re: Head Poll - what type do you have?
We have a Type I Raritan LectraSan Treatment/Direct Discharge unit in our forward head (which does include a 3+ gallon holding/treatment tank) and a user selectable direct discharge or holding tank discharge unit in our aft head that can pump macerated waste material directly overboard; or, into a 20 gallon holding tank for later pump-out or overboard discharge. While we can use a shore-side pump-out, we generally make a run off-shore to discharge the holding tank when necessary. We use Raritan KO with the holding tank unit to breakdown and "digest" the material in the tank and control odor. The material is a bit costly but does go quite a long way and works well. I have also gotten in the habit of draping a couple of sacks made with discarded nylon stocking and filled with activated charcoal over the hoses in the holding tank and the LectraSan compartments to absorb any odors that develop (replaced annually) and we've had no problem with odors.
While few and far between, the holding tank option is necessary for no discharge zones/areas and locales where there isn't good tidal "flushing" action or where there may be a number of boats sharing an anchorage, simply as a matter of courtesy.
FWIW...

My 1985 Nonsuch has a solid bronze Wilcox-Crittenden head. A few years ago I removed all the covering paint and coated it in a clear polyurethane.
I now have a beautiful GOLD HEAD.
And it still works perfectly, after the rebuild 7 years ago.

Good idea John. The other major factor would be cruising location. I was going to try and do one poll with all these factors, but it got way too complicated. Thought it best to keep each one simple, but once this has run its course for a while we can post these other questions, and then hopefully I can cross-correlate all the findings.

It is known as the Gold Throne, and the head is the Throne Room.

Re: Head Poll - what type do you have?
C-Head, and love it. No mechanical parts, to speak of. No smell, comes with a vented storage tank, but have never used it, yet. I like the fact that it is taller than the head I scrapped, too. Eliminates need for a thru hull. Haven't found a draw back to it yet. Best upgrade I've done.

Re: Head Poll - what type do you have?
For "water", a little john consisting of a 1 gallon clothes detergent bottle with a wide mouth. For "other", the "hold a line and squat over the side" method works well. As an added plus, there are no maintenance concerns or pump out fees.

Re: Head Poll - what type do you have?
We installed a Nature's Head on our Bristol 24 three years ago, and brought it with us when we bought our Bristol 29.9. We liked the idea that there would be no maintenance, no smell, fewer thruhulls, and more storage where the holding tank used to be. It's delivered for us on all counts.

Don't get caught.
If not by the cops, just imagine seeing yourself going viral on YouTube videoed by someone sailing by with a long lens on their camera......Your butt might become recognized, and famous.
And and above all...Definitely don't lose your grip.
