Cheap Lowes Water filters

Can someone tell me why I would choose an expensive Seagull water filter (obviously when pulling from my freshwater tanks) vs. using two cheap water filters in a row, like this one?

We use a similar filter for water from the dock when filling our tank. We still filter with a britta for cooking or drinking.

You would be depriving someone from an usurious markup. The only thing more expensive than boat parts is airplane parts.

Guess it depends on what filter that is. What does it filter? How many gallons will it filter. What is the minimum pressure required? What water source are you filtering?
Just putting a picture of a filter does not provide much data.

That's just a fitting... you can put any number of filters in, they are "universal" in size. They take sediment filters, charcoal filters, etc... depending on what you need to filter they can go down to 1 micron. Of course, thats a much lower flow rate than the 20 micron.

Seagull claims they remove cysts so they must also be using a 1 micron filter; since the seagull filters are made to be used at boat pressure, its reasonable to conclude that any 1 micron filter will work.

It is my layman's understanding that filters in general gradually lose their ability to filter cysts so water must occasionally be super chlorinated.

We have used those filters on the boat for years. We use one to fill the tanks and there is one plumbed into the FW system. We use the charcoal filters in both. They seem to do a fine job. Chuck

This housing appears that it will work just fine for cyst removal with the right cartridge. It is very similar to housings that we have used on our units for years. You should consider the Harmsco PP-S-1. It is a 1 micron absolute pleated filter that does not restrict the flow like a carbon filter does. I would recommend a few things. 1st, when you buy one also have the filter cartridge that you will use one hand. Place the filter in the housing and shake it to make sure that it is not loose. For some reason certain cheaper housings are slightly large for the filters put in them. I have only seen this once, but it is a concern. 2nd, don't tighten the fittings or screws too tight. The thin plastic around the female thread will crack in time if overtightened. This might not be an issue as it appears that the female threads are reinforced with metal. Good Luck - Wfxr

We use a similar (but larger) household-style filter housing, in line with a smaller one like you've pictured, for filling our tanks. Dual density filter element (25u outer, 1u inner) in the larger, single density .5u carbon filter in the smaller.

See filtersfast.com, Big Blue (housing) and Pentek DGD-2501 and CBC-10 (elements). The denser filter does affect flow rate; the larger does not (at shorewater pressure).

And then we use a Pur pitcher for drinking water, coffee, etc.

I have a clear one from Hillbilly-depot. Works great with a carbon filter in it. Haven't noticed any i'll effects...i'll effects...i'll effects.
