Transmission-Linkage connection

Good Day all,

While returning from a cruise this past Saturday I attempted to drop off my passengers at my town dock. I lost control of propulsion while maneuvering around. Just perfect, in the narrowest point in the channel, right in front of the dock. Luckily I guy tied at the dock dropped his dink and pushed me to the dock to tie up.

So the linkage disconnected from the transmission control arm. The end of the linkage has a cylinder with a hole. Whoever did that install ( not original) used whatever he had lying around, a flat head screw with a nut. It just vibrated apart. I replaced it is with a bolt with a nut and a jam nut plus Loctite. This at least got me off the dock and I doubt it will come apart. So what should I have used? I was in rush to fix it and I was thinking after perhaps a clevis pin would be better? What is the best way to connect the linkage and the control arm?

I can barely reach it, let alone get my phone in there. I can kinda see it, did the repair by feel. I did think of a pic, just not sure if it will be helpful. If Vital I can try next time I am at the boat.
