the double flexing CV type joints i noted above have a thrust and centering bearing at the shaft end. This relieves the engine/transmission of any side or thrust loads and reduces the alignment requirements.

Egg shaped zinc on the shaft inside the boat. Slide up so it is partly in the shaft log. Tighten it up.

I heard/read this someplace. Makes sense. I forgot to do it when replacing a stern tube using a build up of epoxy with the log covered with a release agent. Had to sand the epoxy to get the angle right.
