Hurth HBW 150 Rebuild

Hi, we just lost the front roller bearing on our 150. there seem to be none available in the US, so was thinking of buying used. Anyone know what are the alternatives that would fit and work. It is on a MOrgan 43 Catalina (lots of room in the compartment) with a Perkins 4108.

Has anyone rebuilt these, we are mechanics but haven't taken one of these apart. Is it doable?

ZF should list a replacement. If not. See if they will give you an SKF # for the bearing. Otherwise find a manual and pull it apart. Take the bearing to an industrial bearing supply. Like these guys

If you have rebuilt transmissions before with success you should be able to rebuild a Herth. There is some shimming involve in some of them so it would be wise to have a manual on your series.

The old Hurth “HBW 150" is now called the “ZF 15 M”, the HBW 150 A is now the “ZF 15 MA”, and the HBW 150 V is now the “ZF 15 MIV”.

Looking at pics, it appears we have a 150 A, or ZF 15MA. 1600+ bucks. anyone have a used one?

Just to finish up. We secured a good used Hurth 150 from Tom List Marine in Sausalito. great guy and the tranny works great. $600. a real savings. Indication was that a rebuild was an iffy proposition, so this worked out for the best. Have a good core if anyone needs one.

I believe its the same as the hbw 50. Im just getting ready to rebuild one and doing my research. Kinda irked at the $75 price tag of the manual. If i dont off find a download which is doubtful as ive been searching for a while, im gonna scan it and would be glad so send you or others a copy.

I do need information for my Hurth HBW 250- same as ZF25M. Looking at the manual, there is the forward gear 44 and the reverse is 65. On both gears there are thrust washers 43. In the manual- art. 6.10.19- there is written: “Check gears 44 and 65 for free movability in an axial direction.” Perfect, and what is now the tolerance of this movability?

Hi, The axial float of the gears is controlled by the shims. There is a description in the manual section 6.6 figure 26. Hope this helps.

You'll likely need some gaskets and such as well, but my local bearing supply (Central Coast Bearing) has been able to get every bearing that I've ever needed way cheaper than the dealership or OEM. Subaru timing belt rollers that were $65.00 each, she was able to get just the bearing for $12.00. I tapped them into the old rollers. A Porsche fuel injection pump shaft seal that was $38.00 from the regular auto parts suppliers she got for $4.50. My cutlass bearing for my boat was $135.00 at West Marine, $125.00 at Defender, she got me for $70.00. My prop shaft intermediate bearing was $150.00 from marine suppliers, $50.00 from Wendy, and she had it in stock. Wendy rocks. She can order anything by size and she can find almost anything by application. I'm sure that there is a good bearing supply near almost all of you, this is a small town.
