Looking for Good Sailing Courses in Southern California

Hey all,

I'm a beginner looking to start with some basic courses. Can anyone make a recommendation for a school near Orange County? I'm considering theses guys:
http://www.californiasailingacademy.com

Also, i'm interested in bluewater and passages. Any advice for beyond taking courses and getting ASA certs?

Cheers,
Nathan

Re: Looking for good sailing courses in Southern California

My wife and I used water sailing">Blue Water Sailing in Marina Del Ray. We took Basic through Bareboat chartering and lived on a 38 foot boat for 8 days while learning to sail her. Part of the course was to sail to Catalina Island with the class and spend 2 nights. We had a great time and when we were done we bought a 35 footer and sailed several thousand miles since. We were given everything we needed to get us started and thanks to that good start we are pretty competent cruisers now, but learn new stuff every day. It was very reasonable and you get the ASA ratings (if you pass the test).
Only draw back is the class was six so it was a bit tight in the cockpit (that's why it is so reasonable) but we liked it anyway.

Orange Coast College sailing center in Newport Beach is the best in the country, hands down. Welcome Aboard! | www.occsailing.com

Re: Looking for Good Sailing Courses in Southern California

I second the recommendation of Orange Coast College's sailng program. I live in Redodndo Beach and got all of the ASA certifications, but to get more cruising experience and gain more skills and local knowledge, we take seminars and multi-day cruising classes through OCC. Definitely excellent learning experiences: 3 day Anchoring in Catalina cruise you'll learn the particulars of every cove on the Island in various conditions and learn how to set, test and raise stern/bow anchors. 5-day Northen Channel Islands cruise includes an overnight w/watches, more anchoring, info on all of,the islamds in various conditions. Great prep for independent cruising in bluish water.

The OP has received a lot of suggestions. I hope he comes back and tells us what he decided to do.
