Bareboat Charter in Croatia

I have been sailing for over 20 years, owned my own boat for over 15, taken many classes and chartered from Sunsail and TMM in Belize, Thailand, Greece, BVI's and the British Virgin Islands. Now, I find that in order to charter in Croatia (and soon, most of Europe and the Med), I need a ASA or USAA certification. Needless to say, I have no desire to "go back to school" and pay big bucks for certification. Has anyone found a work around for this requirement.

I think you need an International Certificate of Competence. You should be able to challenge it.

For yacht charter or flotilla in Croatia the skipper must have RYA Day Skipper Practical certificate or RYA ICC qualification.

Here is a list of US IYT schools that can get you that. IYT World - Schools | United States of America

I believe that they use the Irish Sailing Association standard. http://www.sailing.ie/Portals/0/ICC/...0the%20ICC.pdf

It should be as a acceptable as the RYA ICC.

The ICC is acceptable irrespect of where you get it but also

various ASA/USSA certificates are acceptable including some noddy ones, but limit you to territorial waters. You also need a VHF license if the boat is so equipped.

One of the sailing schools on the West Coast (So Cal) offers the ICC independent of a ASA course for way less time and money. PM me for the name if you cannot find it.

ICC costs about £120 if you have your own boat, hardly prohibitive. Really only a straightforward test, this is probably been pushed for by the charter companies insurance companies.

Had the same problem years ago in Croatia so I flew to Ireland and did the ICC. You can do a direct assessment if you know what your doing .. Takes a day and you get to see Dublin bay...Lasts 5 years and you can renew by phone after that just send your money LOL

Has anyone tried using a USCG commercial license? I know many people have a six-pac/100 ton ticket and was wondering if that was accepted or unrecognized?

I have a 1600 ton ocean master's license and they are still advising me to go take a bareboating class, which I'd like to avoid.

I sent a copy of my academic transcript of subjects completed from an Australian coxswain course to the Croatian charter company. They were happy with that

My Australian Coxwain was accepted in Croatia

I am chartering out of Trogir in two weeks. The charter company has accepted my USCG captain's license in lieu of the us sailing or Asa course certificates.

I'll confirm it all worked out when I make it back, but I looked for this info and couldn't find it anywhere, so hopefully this will be helpful for others.
