Key West to Cancun in 33ft Cruiser

I am curious if it is safe to take a 33ft Cruiser across to Cancun in late Feb early March? I was thinking if the weather is very calm it might be doable. Safety is most important. The boat cruises at 20 knots and of course I will need to figure out how much fuel I need in plastic. Can anyone share their experience?

With the right preparations I do not see why you could not. keep a eye on weather and when you get a good day go for it. If you can maintain 20 knots it would be no more than a long day trip for you, 18+ hours. Take into consideration the gulf stream and arrival time when you plot your course. Best arrive before dark as you will have to navigate inlets through the reef. Lots of boats do it every year, hope to do it myself in the future. Guess we will see.

Thanks! My concern now is fuel. I have a 300 gallon tank and I burn 20 gallon an hour. This makes me miss my sailboat! I don't know how it can be done.
