Bummer on that. I have seen a nifty fix on a very nice boat here in Auckland that I sailed to onga on owned by a guy named Simon who has been cruising all over the place these past years. He runs a bit of tubing from the siphon break on the exhaust to a fitting that goes inside the cockpit. The tube is then aimed at the cockpit drain so that when she is running you see it shooting a steady stream of water, but it goes out the drain and nobodys toes get wet. Cheaper than some sort of alarm, I would bet.
