An "El Torito" sank the 115-foot sport fishing boat "Erik" in the
Sea of Cortez (
Gulf of
California, whatever) earlier this week. "El Torito" is a a quick-moving storm causing raging seas pounded by
lightning and strong winds, "typical" of the area.
The boat sank in the middle of the night after two waves hit it. The first turned the boat on its side, and the second turned it over, causing it to sink in 200-foot waters.
My yesterday's local paper shows a
photo of six happy
men, taken just before the multi-day trip was to begin. Of the six, two survived the sinking, one is dead, and two are still missing. One of the total of seven still missing organized the trip which included 27 of his friends and relatives. A total of 44 had been on board. Survivors either swam ashore or were picked up by fishermen and the Mexican
navy.
