Re: Nilaya / Berserk Missing

Andhøy spoke to NRK this morning. He says they've now crossed the 60 degree south limit, and so they're now illegally in Antarctica again. The Norwegian Polar Institute says they won't decide on punishment until Andhøy and co have returned from Antartica.

The phone call was interrupted because of an ice situation. Andhøy says there's more ice there than last year - not surprising since earlier reports said that it's been decades since there was so much ice.

Andhøy says it's too late in the season to search in the sea after all, but that they'll try to reach the seaside caches to see if they're still there, and check out the planned meeting points.

Edit: A friend of Andhøy says to newspaper Dagbladet that the slower than planned progress has been due to low winds.

It is also possible to do a playback of the sea ice for the last 31 days.
You really can't tell much from those 'full polar scale' pictures. 3/10 ice is about the maximum limit of passable ice for a sail boat and even 1/10 can be very difficult in bad weather. What would be particularily interesting to know is specifically if the two anchorages (backdoor and Horseshoe) are open - that's where Jarle needs to go if he wants to look for cashes - and if the cut into the 'town'/station is open.

NAWWAL is down there and I was hoping he could give us a first hand ice conditions report/pictures.

It's corten steel. Usually the failure in ice is the welds pop, not the steel plate.

Hey Ice,

Here is a photo of the ice right now. It is similiar to the conditions we had last year when Andhoey showed up. The channel is in the upper right corner of the photo. The open water extends another quarter mile south. The icebreaker had no problem breaking the ice this year.

The other photo is Andhoey's gear packed up and ready to ship. It was sent home a few days ago

Hey, thanks. Lovely looking day, most be almost up to freezing , perhaps -2c?

So, Jarle just needs to get thru that patch of bergs & bits at about 70S, and then he can come in the channel. But I guess there is not going to be much time left for open water to go poking around for the wreck or abandoned supplies ashore in Backdoor or Horseshoe.

Nothing terrible in the weather forecast storm-wise at the moment.

Re: Nilaya / Berserk Missing

G'day, mates. So the Nilaya has reached 60 degree S. Has anyone seen any independent verification of this (nothing from the New Zealand authorities at this point)? Here's a little math. It's approximately 1,650 nautical miles from Auckland, around the East Cape of North Island and down to 60 degs S. He has been underway around 14 days. That averages out to 120 nautical miles a day to get there.

I been following the weather very closely since he left via gribs and actual weather stations around the New Zealand coast, such as:
History : Weather Underground

Winds from the south quadrant have dominated this time period. Although not impossible, it is highly unlikely that the Nilaya would have been able to cover this distance since it left Auckland. Just saying...
Cheers.

I'm not sure what your point is.

He obviously has the boat and skills to get there. Why would he say otherwise? He is either where he says he is or will be there eventually.

G'day, Doodles. Just saying to average almost 5 knots VMG in this boat in these southern ocean conditions is one big ask, but then again, maybe my math's wrong. Cheers.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I just don't see the point. What difference does it make?

First, a sailor can go if they fulfill the requirements. Second, it is the same for a TV crew. They've either done the paperwork and gotten the required inspections and insurance, or they are not going to the antarctic or they are not legal.

So, you're saying they can get a legal permit to go look for and report on someone who is there illegally. Makes sense to me.
