Money Issues in Mexico . . News Release
FORNTERA, the national news source in mexico released a statement reporting the new 500 peso note just printed is THE number one most easily counterfeited bill in the financial market today.... although worth only around 46 dollars in conversion wit us dollars, , this bill can cause a bunch of worry-- i wouldnt accept these for a while-- be safe--- dont accept 500 peso notes until they have corrected this flaw.. goood luck and smoooth sailing!!

And how would you 'not accept' these, as that's what comes out of the ATMs down here.

i am not so brave as to trust international atms much--i go inside the bank for money-- heck i dont trust OUR atms..... going inside bank is good. one is able to accept or deny unwanted bills. seems safer to go inside a bank rather than trust the atm or the line behind you for that service-- but then, i am female and do not trust many readily.....especially when not in my own home territory.

So I assume you are taking in US bills and getting then exchanged, as opposed to using a debt card to withdraw from a US bank. I don't like carrying a lot of US bills with me. It seems ATMs and debit cards are really the only practical way to deal with money internationally.

i donot carry money as cash with me as i travel--i use debit card inside bank. is not difficult. i donot spend a lot when i go to town in any country--even at home.
i can understand a professional captain having a problem with cash-- just be careful--i would hate to see anyone having a problem because of fake bills. even if only equating to 50 dollars more or less....but, still can be a big problem. please use caution.
i didnt place this here to argue the point--i placed as a word of warning to those who donot know this lil known factoid and may be vulnerable to the problem.
perhaps a line of credit, as used to be the way to travel, may be the new way to travel, again... my bank suggested that to me

I appreciate the note. I certainly didn't know that Mex $500 peso notes were being counterfeited at rates greater than US bills. I was just trying to think about how it might be practically useful. I certainly couldn't tell a fake Mex bill from a real one. So far, I have only gotten cash from ATMs that were physically connected to banks while the bank is open. I guess I could go inside and withdraw on a debit card. Not sure if you get the same exchange rate or fees.
