they did a replanking 2 years ago-and a big refit in 2008, after which she has been in almost constant cruising mode.
she sails often and far, and has been in europe and sailed north sea.
i think she is not with sprung planks.
i think the brave crew who were sailed into the heart of the storm did a very good job.
they were sailing to a schedule, and 4- 5 days ago they broadcast a spot-type track message showing their path leading into the heart of sandy.
i am sure the captain would not have declared his crew to abandon ship had there not been a good reason having to do with crew safety.
but, then i wonder about his course into the heart of the beast storm-this article states he was trying to go around it....
the bbc news article stated bounty is floating nicely. perhaps the salvors will be kind with the dispo of this boat when found.

neither article mentions the boat as sinking as they left her--one states she was floating nicely a sthey left--let us hope she is afloat at the end of this mayhem...appears this is story number one, as they were in process of abandonment of ship...

A schooner is any sailing vessel with "2 or more masts, where the forward-most mast is shorter than the mast(s) aft" Here is a photo of the only 7 masted schooner built.

But more interesting in the link is the written text where a crew-member phoned her parent and tell them that she loved them "just in case something happens" - - which makes me think that the crew person was not happy about venturing out into a known hurricane's path.

Which brings up the subject of whether you make a personal decision to "not go" based on your own judgement or simply following the others who may or may not be concerned about their safety.

As others have posted, basing your "go-no go" safety decisions on trying to "make a schedule" is a almost certain way to invite disaster.

the captain was that crew members daddy, per bbc news...
the track of bounty was headed directly into damsandy's heart....storm was so huge he couldnt have found other side--1600 mile diameter is hugeous.
sad sad loss..was a good ship with a heart and soul.
was awesome to sit inside her hull and listen to her.

she was sooo tiny!!! but not next to my rowing walker bay when i sent a message in a bottle to a crew who was a friend.then she was HUGE...

You are incorrect in stating that the boat was built to take a lot more; the boat was built to be a movie set. Everything is shut down here in the US East coast including the federal government but apparently you would not be daunted by sailing a square rigged move set into one of biggest weather systems to hit the N. Allantic ever.Please google why Cape Hatteras is called the graveyard of the Alantic.

The fact that the captain put to sea in the face of an oncoming hurricane is pretty to close to criminal negligence. I don't want to hear that a ship is safer at sea than at the dock - the ship may be safer, though apparently not in this case, but the crew is always saver ashore!

crew didnt make the orders but followed--is brave to follow orders into a hellstorm and trying to find way around--captain made bad decision, but that doesnt mean crew wasnt brave to follow orders as per job description. mutiny didnt happen.

BAck when I took my Yachtmaster, I was told repeatedly: Never, ever, sail out if there is a hurricane. Never, ever.

If you get caught in one, turn and sail like hell and get out of its way.

The best way to avoid having to sail in a hurricane is to never sail out when one is approaching
