navigation skills in the '60s and spent years travelling throughout the pacific seeking out the last living traditional practitioners of those skills with a view to trying to preserve some of the rapidly dying secrets of this art. He was a sailor as well as a scholar and recorded trips he made with some of the old
men in which they used their skills to navigate between the far flung islands of the carolinas.
