Boat Burns in Grenada!

Just before dawn this morning an 80 foot new Jongers sailing boat "Uisge Beatha" caught fire. No injuries.

Re: Boat burns in Grenada!!!

Any idea how it happened? I can't believe the boat anchored next to it waited until it was a full flaming inferno to pull up anchor and move!

Re: Boat burns in Grenada!!!

They were upwind so they thought it was safe... till the gas tanks started exploding!

Fire started 4:20am in the electrical pannel. Fire extinguisers couldnt get behind the pannel.
"Rescue 1" from Prickly Bay Marina alerted by the marina security guards who saw it. They were on scene minutes later but couldnt get in with their extinguisers and dont have a pump.
Coast Guards pump is currently out of action(!)

Owner and one or two crew on board at the time.

Re: Boat burns in Grenada!!!

The boat is still burning and still afloat!

I think another fuel tank has ruptured as theres heaps of black smoke. 8 hours after the fire started.

Hiya Mark. You know what the biggest cause of fire on boats is?

Insurance.

Re: Boat Burns in Grenada!

G'Day Mark,

Still afloat after 8 hours of burning... I'm impressed. I would guess from her size and that durability that she ain't FRP... likely Aluminium (note Aussie spelling... aincha proud of this Yank?).

But the story sure makes me glad that I still have some Halon extinguishers on board. Much more effective against fires behind panels, etc.

Sad to see... nice looking boat.

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Boat Burns in Grenada!

I once saw an AquaSport 16 burn to the w/line, the fire consuming all the Polyester resin, leaving the Chop and woven intact. Was surprised that the glass didn't melt. Friend salvaged then boat, screwed 1/8" hardboard to the good part and rebuilt the boat. True story.

Its still afloat and from the stern you can see right inside... its just a shell. I'll take the camera over when it stops raining.

...makes me want to put my panel in a fire box. It would be easy to install a sprinkler system or a halogen tank, does anybody do that?

Re: Boat Burns in Grenada!

I have put "fire extinguisher system in electric box" on my to-do list. I certaibly would hate this to happen to my boat.

Mine is in an area that is all metal (3/16 aluminum) except for the door. After seeing this thread I kinda wish I had also made the door out of metal.

The Lexan window is held with small screws that will easily give way to the butt of a fire extinguisher if quick access is needed.
