Not sure were the reporter got the 35 knots of wind from, we had 66 knots on the south coast and they were not that far away. Must have been horrific out there.

Bet they messed up the units. 35 m/sec is 68 knots. Meters per second is the velocity unit usually used (at least in the Scandinavian waters I'm familiar with).

WHy would such an experienced skipper set out into that sort of weather? All the european forecasters have been predicting that sort of weather for the last 10 days. Scary just to think about it!

He didn't just set out, he was on a return deliver from Brazil after the TJV.

Maybe after doing a couple of Vendee Globe's and a few North Atlantic crossings in the winter you get a bit arrogant. He even messaged that the Atlantic Coast of France had some nasty stuff coming. But then maybe he was pushing to get in ahead of the worst of it.

I think I would have sheltered in the Azores.

Sailing Anarchy had a fairly objective thread on this. It sounds like another structural failure of an IMOCA designed by Juan K. Either way hard to second guess a guy with more blue water miles than most.

It's just arrogance , most high performance sailors suffer from it. Usually they keep pushing until along comes the conditions that break the boat.

^^ Everyones luck runs out, same with any extreme sport. However pushing into the series of weather systems that the whole area has had over the last 10 days does call into question anyones judgement. After all with all his experience he got it wrong. His boat sank.
