Re: Pearson P-40 Centerboard

Hi there,

I’m new to the forum. I’ve just purchased a P40, which I hope to spend the next couple years bringing back to life.

Hull seems to be dry, but there is a good amount of rot in the interior wood-work.

I’m going to strip the hill back to glass, replace through-hulls and seacocks, replace/fix rudder packing gland, the cutlass bearing for prop-shaft, as well as a new drip less system…. In addition to chainplates. Lots of work, I haven’t even listed it all! Haha

Anyways, I don’t want to be exhaustive, but my main question is that the westerbeke engine in there is shot, and I was thinking of replacing it with a Yanmar 3YM30AE I have some questions about compatibility, as well as the v-drive.

I’d love to be in contact with anyone who owns/owned a P40, who might be willing to mentor me a bit through some questions.

Feel free to PM me or email me. I don’t think I have PM privileges yet! Haha

In any case, it’s been nice reading through the comments here, and I hope everyone is well

Hello, you can PM me or email me if you like and I can answer any and all questions you have. I probably know your boat and can tell you a bit about it.

Cheers

I am a relatively new owner of a P40 as well - My brothers and I acquired it a couple of years ago in the San Francisco bay and had the Westerbeke rebuilt as the first order of business. We have sailed ours a small handful of times in the bay and it's been an absolute pleasure and are looking forward to more.

We are now in the process of rebuilding the Walters V-drive and will hopefully be getting her on the hard within the next year to refinish the bottom and address everything below WL, prior to having it assessed.

I joined this community looking for tools and resources in our journey and am excited to learn. I am a ten-year+ experienced Alaska commercial fisherman (and WA,OR,CA) but consider myself completely green to the world of sailing.

Can anyone say how many of these are still out there and how many were ever made by Pearson?

I'm not sure why but memory tells me somewhere around 80 were made and ours might be #41..

Cheers,

Re: Pearson P-40 Centerboard

Hi limerock, there were 72 P40s built originally, however a few have been lost due to fire, sinking, etc. I fact one sank in SF bay a few years ago.

They sail well but have a relatively large sail plan so if youre mostly a beginner sailor be more conservative with your sail hoists (use reefs) till you get a bit more comfortable with the gusty winds in SF.

Best regards
Ovi

I've got my eye on a beautiful P40 for sale in the Miami area. She's in great shape and includes a Mark II rudder and new folding racing prop. Unfortunately, the broker wants $45k for her which is $15k more than I want to spend. Here's hoping.

I think that's a great price for a 40 ft boat that's in great condition!

Re: Pearson P-40 Centerboard

Offer 30 (with a deposit) and see what happens. The listing is not very informative. The pictures are all nice. Of course they are. What are they NOT showing? How old are the sails? What shape is the anchor tackle in? Do the lights all work? Why did they repaint the engine? What made it necessary to replace the prop? How is the v-drive holding up? Any osmotic blisters? Why are they selling? There are always lots of questions to ask about boats.
