Re: Vagabond 52 Pilot House Ketch vs Amel Super Maramu

I don't know anything about that brand, but if you're talking about the 1989 boat on yachtworld, I would say go with the Amel, without question, if only because of the unsightly high-windage aftermarket hard dodger that they are claiming is a pilothouse. The Amel's hard dodger is part of its design and built in at the factory. Aside from that, I would bet the Amel has better thought out systems and equipment layout/access. It's a well regarded brand that is still in business and can probably contacted for information if needed. And it's hard to imagine that the Vagabond has as high a build quality. Also, the Amel will probably be a faster boat.

Vastly different boats. Apples / Oranges question.

To me clearly an Amel.

Re: 1989 Vagabond 52 Pilot House Ketch vs Amel Super Maramu

These are extremely different beasts with very different design goals, design/build histories, etc. ...

anyone looking to give you real advice would need a lot more detail on what it is you're looking to do, how much you do of your own work vs. hiring others, your history with boats, etc. etc.

from a pure build quality and thoughtfulness of design solution it's hard to beat the Amel SM on the basis of their reputation, original design goal (livaboard bluewater cruiser), community of support, and the sheer number that have been built and deeply used for that purpose...

but really much more detail about you is needed.

it's definitely also worth really deeply looking into maintenance history as this can easily mean 100k additional funding needed to really bring everything up to ship shape for extended long distance cruising...

Re: Vagabond 52 Pilot House Ketch vs Amel Super Maramu

Vastly different boats. We looked at a Vagabond in Boston Harbor. 30,000 pounds of slow. We have sailed in 2 Super Maramus. Safe, easy to sail, lots of gear - be prepared to be maintaining and fixing a lot of stuff - but. Very competent ocean going sailor. Ever in my budget but I enjoyed sailing my friends’ Maramus. Our lower budget brought us a Beneteau Oceanis 40. - lots of amenities, a nice safe sailor but not as rigged out as the Maramu for an ocean crossing.
