Thanks, a comprehensive reply and I mostly agree. I'll give some thought to how I can adopt the "draw cord" approach to setting my staysail.

I like your "draw cord" concept for a hanked on jib - do you have any experience or comment on how well it works when deploying a storm jib, ie will it keep it secure on deck...
