Re: Staysail boom, again.

On my boat the staysail is a bit in between. Pearson supplied several rig variations on the 424/422 series: ketch, sloop, cutter and I think what some call a slutter IE a sloop with a staysail...

Re: Staysail boom, again.

So how was the set and shape of the sail with vs without the boom?

Assume you referring to the regular staysail itself as in it would not be heavy enough or small enough or shaped properly for...

Re: Staysail boom, again.

Well how fortuitous. Digging through my odds and ends rigging spares I found a piece exactly like this. Just the size to fit over the stay with holes and a clevis pin on the end the correct size...

Re: Staysail boom, again.

That was my thought. One concern, if made from stainless would it chaff and wear on the stay over time. Thinking about making something like this but in bronze that would be a bit softer than the...

Re: Staysail boom, again.

Thank you very much. That is what I thought it was. In your installation the bracket the boom attaches to is on the top eye in the turnbuckle. I would assume that attaching a bracket to the stay...

Re: Staysail boom, again.

Very interesting. Looks very much like my system.

I rigged wire diagonals with turnbuckles exactly like that on my old davits. Turned the davits into a completely rigid, non wobbling structure. ...

Re: Staysail boom, again.

Thanks. Even zooming I can't see the specifics but it does appear that the boom is attached to the stay in some manner. And that's what I'm looking for,

Re: Staysail boom, again.

Looking closely at your photos it does appear that the boom is attached to a bracket that wraps around the stay?

Re: Staysail boom, again.

Oh yea. Duh. DF here as well. Didn't think about basic geometry.

But I might be able to do it anyway. My boom is mounted 5-6" (that's 12.5-15 cm for the metric types) aft of the stay so...

Re: Staysail boom, again.

Hopefully bring more comments with my latest thought.

Club boom is on a fixed, rigid mount. Basically a 12-14" post mounted vertically on the foredeck with a gooseneck on top attached to the...

Re: Staysail boom, again.

Thanks. I realized I was confusing the wishbone boom Hoyt used for the Freedom 40 mainsail with the jib boom which is quite different.

Need to study this more closely but at first glance the...

Re: Staysail boom, again.

Thanks. I helped my son-in-law research dinghies last year (well now year before last). A local dealer wanted to sell him a Walker Bay but they got horrible reviews for the bad customer service...

Re: Staysail boom, again.

With a 10.5' RIB and a 15 HP Yamaha I can plane with four as long as they aren't NFL linebackers and feel quite safe with that even in a pretty good chop. If it's a struggle climbing in from the...

Re: Staysail boom, again.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. My thoughts back.

The dinghy. Have tried hard dinks though not a nesting dink. Perhaps one with some kind of fenders or tubes around the sides would...

Staysail boom, again.

Still trying to decide about the staysail boom. The main reason is still the same, it's really in the way on the foredeck. When not flying the staysail it's a tripping hazard and makes movement...
