Re: Skipmac's boat moved

Thanks Ann,

Went back to the boat today and put the sails back up. They were soaked in the rains that preceded the storm so it was really good to get them out of the boat before I created a mold...

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

There's always at least one damn optimist around wanting to look at the bright side of things.

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

Thanks. Quite glad this one is over.

Regarding leak detectors, would be quite happy to find a slightly less dramatic way to find leaks. :nonono:

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

Well, after a day to digest it here's my take on riding out a hurricane.

1. There's only a few things you can do to help yourself in this kind of storm. Most of the time you are just along for...

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

To me a doghouse is a covered helm position or hard cover over a cockpit.

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

A friend today told me he called it a turtle but that name just didn't ring a bell, but so far that's two votes for turtle.

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

The marina claimed they are really larger concrete blocks, 1-2000 lbs (which sounds pretty small to me) but a friend just sent me a link to a you tube video showing some of the moorings being place...

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

What were your plans if Mathew hadn't changed course? Take the dinghy to shore and hang out in the mangroves?

Because it never blew 100 kts before and I never went through a...

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

Did not see any serious damage on any boats hauled. Water was about 9' higher than normal high tide. The piers are usually 10' or more from the water but at max was 3' or less. Boats that...

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

Yes, went through Mathew on the boat. Got the last flight from NY (had to interrupt a visit to see my granddaughter) to Jacksonville and got to the boat Thursday evening. Had seriously imposed on...

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

Thanks. The eye has passed by and is now about 80 miles Northeast of me but still getting gusts 60 knots or better. The local weather claims the winds are down to no more than tropical storm-force....

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

Thanks. Will check out the Cuba info.

Good luck on your restoration. If you have any questions just ask. I think I've touched just about any system a boat can have in the last years.

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

Thank you.

Brutal is right. It's hard get anything done in the middle of the day. I do my gallon or two of water and juice and still get home feeling dehydrated.

Plan to go out with the...

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

No party yet. I have 7 1/2 years worth of tools, spare parts, old parts and miscellaneous whachamacallits I have to finish sorting and stowing. THEN I'll have a party.

Thanks

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

Cuba is on the list but after 7 1/2 years of blood, toil, tears and sweat I'm not getting close to Cuba until I know the gubimint has figured out the rules and won't try to confiscate my baby.

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

Thanks.

Now if I make it through hurricane season and the weather ever moderates enough that I can go outside without risking heat stroke and skin cancer, I might actually go sailing.

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

That was/is the plan. Unfortunately it's gotten a little late in the year to start north. By the time I could leave and get there it would be time to turn around and head back.

New plan,...

Re: Skipmac's boat moved

Rat fink. You outed me again.

Now the pressure is really on. If I have boat that works I will have to start finding excuses for why I'm not going anywhere in it.
