Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

I agree with John that anything (or nothing) on the ground side will work at some frequencies.

I am not arguing with you. I read your post and thought you were using a power meter. The data...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

My point is that measuring power in the ground lead is not the same as measuring current. Also, most power meters don't measure "power" they measure forward and/or reflected power (technically they...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

A power meter indicates forward and reflected power. It is not a current measurement. Forward or reflected power on the ground wire is a not germane to determining radiated power.

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

Are you using a current meter or a power meter? They two are significantly different in how they work.

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

I have seen and run many electromagnetic field simulations. For sure the wires "concentrate" the fields. The "ground" wires are no different in this respect than the radiator wire. The fields are...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

Goudurix is correct that the problem is non-trivial. Each path added to the ground return collects some current and brings it to the tuner "ground". This current has to be induced into the wire by an...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

Multiple ground paths are ok. Electrons take the path of least impedance which is what you want for a ground system. It's unlikely any problem is created by multiple paths. If it's working leave it...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

Is this the first time a phobia could be cured with a capacitor? ;)

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

It is easy to isolate the through hull against galvanic issues. But your description of the problem suggests the boat did not have galvanic isolation. That is another subject and must be addressed...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

What's wrong with attaching something to a through hull? If you worry about galvanic effects use a capacitor to isolate DC.

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

There is nothing wrong with tying the tuner to that ground plate. Go for it. Electrons cannot read a schematic so they have no idea that plate is meant only for lightning. Lightning cannot read a...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

A copper strip about 100mm (4 inches) wide that connects the tuner to a nearby bronze underwater through hull is the cheapest and often the best solution. "Nearby" meaning preferably 1M (3-4 feet) in...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

In order for the KISS to do what is claims it must radiate RF power from the bundle of wires. There is no other way for current to flow in the ground terminal of the tuner. And there must be current...

The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

If you had read the messages you would have found that this type of ground system has been measured and found not to work as well as its proponents think it does. These systems are not as good as a...

The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

I agree. Don't worry that the thru-hulls are bonded. Use the capacitor trick unless using the SGC tuner with internal DC blocking. The foil does not have to be heavy to work. The thickness is purely...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

There is no need to waste money on several expensive oversize capacitors in this application. The surface mount capacitors are rated for RF and the math dictates that they will work just fine. We do...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

There is no need for an expensive 7.5kV capacitor in the ground lead.

The voltage on the DC blocking capacitors cannot be several kilovolts. Ground current is less than 100A for sure and most...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

I would not think it a great idea to connect the SSB tuner ground to a water or fuel tank. There isn't any need for that. Connect the SSB tuner to a convenient thru-hull with a copper foil (wider is...

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

That's good to know. The SGC tuner is a popular one for marine use. I wonder if other marine tuners do that?

Re: The KISS SSB Counterpoise - Revealed ( with Pics )

If SGC is putting in a DC block they aren't showing it in their literature. The schematic in the technical manual is from 1992 and it shows no capacitor in the tuner ground.
