Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

Well, my point is that whatever happened, it's not likely to happen on your Lagoon, and they are really not the same kind of boat at all even though they are both called "catamarans".

If they're...

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

It seems these boats are known as "AC72" boats. The name "catamaran" seems to be used as a historical reference to the basic style.

If I mention the word "catamaran" in random company, I'll often...

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

My point is that hydrofoil races should not be called catamaran races.

I disagree with your statement, and do not see any logical relationship to my original comment.

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

A catamaran doesn't have foils - I think it's absurd they allow those in a "catamaran" race. It should be called a hydrofoil race. Any they confuse the public with regard to real catamarans. You know...

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

Some designs are weighted for balance purposes, i.e. steel or lead ballast will be loaded in the front to counterbalance the engine weight in the back, but that is not a keel weight.

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

I think cat owners have been told that their boats are slow for so long, they have just chosen to accept it rather than bother arguing the point.

I think if hard evidence were ever laid out, and...

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

Glad to see these guys are doing a brisk business. I had thought about how someone should create a cat-specific brokerage business, and found these guys. I think they're doing a good job of...

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

Disagreeing. You are placing sailability above liveability. By my definition, almost any cat over 39' in length is more liveable than almost any mono. You are not applying my definitions, but your...

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

Truthfully that is my conclusion. Over 50' or so, you're better off with a cat for long-term liveaboard cruising (unless you love sport-sailing your 60' keelboat).

Under 50' though, cat's are not...

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

To make amends for my misapplied comparison:

If anyone created an CAT that bucked and rolled over every swell, that heeled over 45 degrees putting the occupants into a crevice, that required that...

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

Ok fine, so I guess many cruisers are in it for the sailing first. But for those of us who aren't we are in it for the travel and lifestyle first.

My priority list is as follows, and I think that...

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

The slowest cat is the one whose captain is enjoying where is he is at, rather than wishing he were somewhere else.

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

"I can't see why anyone would want to sail in a catamaran. That's not sailing. Whoever would want to sail in that?"

THAT's a troll.

"I can't see why anyone would want to drive an RV. That's not...

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

Not particularly. For some, the main point is traveling and living comfortably and freely.

It happens that sailing is an economical way to do that, compared to motoring.

Have you ever seen an...

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

The point was that there is a lot of commentary and opposition that are based on NON cruising points - like the weekend sailors talking about how much they love the wind in their face and the spray...

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

Replace the word "boats" with "cruising boats" and you'll find that multihulls are very rapidly gaining in share.

Re: What are the Slowest Cats?

It never fails to surprise me - though I think the day is soon to come when it will fail - that the "sailing over cruising" crowd repeatedly feels comfortable denegrating the "cruising" experience on...

Re: What are the slowest cats?

Coffin vs. Condo. I'd rather live in a smaller condo than a larger coffin, and also would rather anchor 30 ft from the beach than 30 yards

I've made, and have heard the same from others, the...

Re: What are the slowest cats?

There's a whole separate thread on the topic, so I don't want to belabor it here - it's been belabored at least once before.

I said that no other design can match the combination of design and...

Re: What are the slowest cats?

It sounds like you are unwilling to look at the question objectively, which is also fine! Sailing is not always a rational venture, and it probably shouldn't be made to be one.

Cruising and...

Re: What are the slowest cats?

A jeanneau 53 does not have a bimini top or a top-deck cabin. In fact, almost no monohull in existence has a top-deck cabin, and also has a deeper draft -- all points you mentioned.

It's not...

Re: What are the slowest cats?

I agree on this comparison - given equivalent capability, living accommodation, overall design characteristics, etc I do believe the cat can be expected to be as fast, if not faster under most points...

Re: What are the slowest cats?

Start a new thread on mods for increasing the speed of lagoons. From what I've read, one of the major limiting factors is the size of the sails.

More sails = more speed = more risk of capsize if...

I already fished that pond - I had a whole thread on it! Those fish are tired out.

Re: What are the slowest cats?

Cats are inherently "fast" boats - faster than equivalent mono's, if one were made, in many conditions.

The reputation for slowness comes from intentionally undersized sailplans (to reduce wear...
