Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

This is a common, and in my opinion worrying view. The GPS does not "navigate" at all. It gives us a position fix. Humans have to make decisions and interpret this fix.
Even some sensible analysis...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Don't abandon traditional forms of navigation just because you only have electronic charts. There are many situations where traditional forms of navigation are superior.

Entering a bay with...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

I don't know where I am, but I am sure of where I am not.

This is a good principal of DR navigation.

I am still not clear why, other than a an exercise, or practice, why you would not turn on...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

You could assign the the crew member with the marital problems to monitor the GPS. He could look over your shoulder while you doing the DR plot, and say "so you you think we are, that's interesting"...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

For full time "traditional" navigation like this I would much prefer paper charts.

However there is no great difficulty doing what you want on most electronic charting systems. Some of the...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

It is easy to build a robust and reliable GPS system.
I would suggest two fixed GPS units with their antennae in different locations. They can be set up so that if one fails the flick of switch...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

$100 on a HH GPS would be money well spent IMHO.

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

It's worth exploring the capabilities of your electronic charts. The electronic chart works fine with most normal traditional navigation techniques, but it worth practicing. Even if you have paper...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

I would hope no one would sneer at you for having a backup GPS.
GPS is an important bit of safety gear. To have a backup is prudent.

GPS chips have become so cheap they are being fitted to more...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

I think this is playing a role in some of the discussion. There is a great deal of satisfaction when using a paper chart that is lost when doing the same thing on a chart plotter.

I wonder if...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

If you have lost all your GPS units and compasses aboard a cruising boat it's likely you (or the world) have bigger problems, but its useful to find north when walking etc.

In the northern...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

It's not difficult to put "pencil" marks on an electronic chart.

The software will even instantly calculate the bearing of the line.
There is no need to ditch all those navigational techniques.

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

I am not sure why.
You can plot the lat and long from your handheld on any electronic chart. You can place a position cross just like you would on paper.

A paper or electronic chart would both be...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

I think the lack of knowledge is a real problem. Skippers who use electronic charts should certainly have the traditional navigational skills.

GPS often gets the blame for the poor standard of...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

I appreciate everyone keeping there answers civil on this matter. I know there are strong beliefs on both sides.

Perhaps it's time after nearly 800 posts to widen the debate slightly.

I had a...

In many countries legislation has lagged behind technological...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

It's a backup GPS then, not a backup electronic chart.

To eliminate paper charts up you need IMHO multiple valid electronic chart systems some with an independent battery supply.

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Electronic charts still function without GPS input. The loss of GPS input effects those with and without paper charts equally. There is no need to fear "serious strife" if the GPS fails and there are...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

GPS is quite separate to any consideration of the charting system. If the GPS goes down it effects the use of paper charts as much as electronic ones.

Nevertheless it's an interesting topic. In...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

It depends on the program. My favourite is maxsea that makes it very easy. On most of the chartplotters the best way is to create a route, this allows multiple lines to be drawn on the chart. The...

Military GPS had a special code that removed this error.
During the war they ran out of...
