Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Quite a few problems with boats of all kinds that live in the water full time are caused by a failure to understand electrolytic issues.

Ferros are a common one, people think of it as a 'cement'...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Hard to say, lot of hulls there, whether any of them are for sale is the question - and at what price.

Pirie is much the same, there's a deep channel that goes all the way in, but you need to...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

True, particularly with diesels. I got lucky with the ancient Yanmar on the Ferro. The not going was simply due to it not being used for some years - it was stuck in gear which was too much for the...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

In a forum post, if it's something not on the web already, an attachment (the paper clip symbol) is the one to use.

The insert image only works for urls (stuff on the web already).

Well, that's pretty much my concept too.

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

It is? Ply here is very expensive, at least marine grade, mild steel plate is actually cheaper. Wooden boats are nearly impossible to insure too. Steel is ok and so is glass, some will insure...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Matt, thanks for this. I'm comfortable with fixing something that has previously worked. Building it from scratch is a whole other ball game, I have a bit of experience fixing the unfixable and...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Never costed doing something like that. I can fix things, but never tried to build anything that elaborate. A place to work would be an issue. Put a boat at the back of my mate's factory to do...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Mmm, unfortunately the Chief Officer is NOT comfortable in small boats, the 12' tender took her 3 weeks to get used to. A half day on a 22' Duncanson in a stiff breeze with the lee rail leaving a...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Yeah, that makes sense. As you say knowing how to pick one from the other is doubtless something that only comes with a lot of experience.

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Mate, I sympathise, I'm also only working part time and not through choice.

Yeah, I keep hearing 'something better will come up' - maybe it will, but in two years of watching, nothing much has,...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Yes, that would probably be nice. Finding one like that (particularly here) is something of a task however.

I've since had some contact and got a bit more history.

He suggests she weighs...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Ok MarkJ and Mark1977 thank you for being direct.

I'm not blind to the consensus from the very experienced people here which basically says, 'forget it'.

I suppose that means I should just...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Ok, you obviously haven't seen the situation here. I'm not sure about the east coast but there are no marinas like you describe here. Marinas here don't have 'back lots' in fact a lot don't have...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Yes, I'm guessing it weighs around 2 tonne, that's 400-600 for scrap metal, plus fittings that are saleable, mast and boom, anchor, winches etc. Probably close to the same. Put it this way, if he...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

I'm really not that silly either. And I still don't have a boat

Alright, can you be specific about what makes it something to avoid (in your opinion)?

I'm not being facetious, it's clear...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Heh, yes, I had that in mind. That was my point to the seller.

I quote from my email to him "...I think we can agree she’s a fair sort of a mess and probably more like scrap metal in her...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Ah yes. You clearly understand. There is something about bringing something back from the brink that appeals to me as well. I've done it with cars and other things. I'm far more comfortable...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Oh yes, I did learn.

1) I can weld and have access to a factory with MIG TIG and Plasma cutters, metal benders etc etc.
2) It's more like 2500km
3) I'm not paying more than 500 (he wants 1500...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Don't disagree. At the time, and even now to a lesser degree - it seems to be more of a buyers market at the moment boats in SA were few and far between under 20k for something anywhere near that...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

No, spoke to a couple, none were interested in surveying a ferro. One that grudgingly said he might wanted ridiculous money to do so. All of them seemed to know very little about ferro construction...

Dunno. If he did, he never advertised it. I don't think so, I'm fairly sure the Maritime people would have let that slip if he had. I don't think he's exactly on their Christmas card list...

Re: I Wish I Never Bought This Boat

Ok, I was last here in 2011. I've been too depressed over the outcome of my first foray into the used 'fixer upper' boat universe to come back and tell the story.

I bought a 35' Ferro Ketch,...
