Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

Can't speak about other states, but Florida does not require a functional engine. If the boat can be sailed, it does not have to have a functional engine. In Jay's case, he had NO way to propel his...

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

It all depends on what *else* you want out of life. I sing in a chorus, and tutor, and enjoy going to plays, concerts, street festivals, etc. I'm not interested in cutting most of my ties with...

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

Yes. These are details only locals would know. He is likeable (although I suspect not always; I don't think that blow to his jaw came out of the blue), but the incident with him gave credibility to...

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

Sorry, Bob, the larger issue isn't clear from your post, that "Captain" Jay was a symbol of an ongoing concern in this town that basically all the liveaboard off the waters were living as Jay did....

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

I think it came up because the failure to dispose of human (and animal, as it turns out) waste is at the heart of community concerns where Capt. Jay kept his boat. I think someone tried to argue that...

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

"Did some research (https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/tags/research.html) on the little town of Gulfport. There ARE treatment plants (of course). Harrison County Utility Authority...

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

Do some research on the little town of Gulfport and you will find that there are no sewage treatment plants there. I'm quite sure if we had raw sewage pumping into that water the beach would be...

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

No, Zee. Anchoring is protected by the Florida constitution -- IF the anchored boat is a "cruising boat." To be a cruising boat it has to move once in a while. Jay's boat has no means of propulsion....

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

Huh? There's a flow of human feces into Boca Ciega Bay? No there's not ...

What right do we have to interefere? Are you kidding? Ok, YOU park your boat out there, and when his current gear...

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

We can't say he was hurting no one else, because his dog was a case of serious medical neglect.

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

In Florida that would require a change to the Constitution and is unlikely.

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

It could easily be the cost of disposing of the boats. I know Gulfport only goes there as a last resort.

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

Exactly.

The local police have washed their hands of it, probably due to budget cuts (most money comes from property and sales tax, and this isn't a wealthy town). As I said, the marine police...

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

Thank you! I've never been there and had no idea. Amazed that such tides exist in Florida. Now I want to go there! :)

Floating docks the norm there?

Actually -- since I was the OP -- I'll explain (that's a good way to find out what it was about -- go to the OP) -- it was an UPDATE on a man in a really tough situation that a significant number of...

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

Where in Florida has a 6' tide? Didn't know we had that anywhere -- or such a deep marina.

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

Can't do the math, because most of those boats have these things called "holding tanks." If all those boats were dumping in the marina, the stench would be overwhelming.

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

I think you've missed something there. The people complaining are the people who live in the town, not the people on the water. And I've got to say, I've gone to other marinas for the weekend and not...

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

The fact is, if you jump in the water and pee -- or poop -- no one's gonna know unless the evidence goes floating by. Even then no one will know it was you.

But we could still do what we could do.

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

We're in complete agreement here: adequate ground tackle, sanitation, and being mobile. To me, requiring adequate ground tackle is the same as requiring that a shed you erect in your back yard be...

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

I think that's a terrific idea. This is what the CG does if they inspect your sanitary system. I don't think it's fair to say that no one wants to come up with viable solutions. I think it's much...

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

I agree with you there, and I would have to agree that the critics have been given persuasive evidence. It would help so much if someone were willing to use what laws there are. As for deciding what...

Re: The controversy over "Captain Jay" continues

You're absolutely right about that, but it's easier with a house than with a boat ... thus this discussion.
