Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Depends on how you use it, Troup. No one on my boat who used chart plotter alone for navigation would be allowed to navigate.

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Well, it's true. I had a sail school graduate on my boat one night a couple of weeks ago. I was showing him chart plotter basics, and we were bringing the boat back into the marina -- under power --...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Again, this discussion is really about personal preferences so if the use of a Chart Plotter and its vector format charts works for you - great. My only great beef with chart plotters and vector...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

WOW -- thank you very much for that very clear explanation! I just bought a tablet and have to decide "which type" of chart to get for it ..

but no I don't -- I can get both, and that's what I'm...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

It's a little more complicated in the US. You're not required to have any kind of charts. However, maritime law applies, and there could be any number of circumstances where having a chart or plotter...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

PS I get your point on DR. My friend used what information he had to predict where he would be in a half an hour. Being very familiar with both his boat's traits and the waters, he was spot-on, but...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

I acknowledged that the flaw with the chart plotter was user error -- in three ways. First, he put in bad waypoints. Second, he didn't check them. Third, he didn't confirm with a chart. I didn't...

Oh yeah, if you need information FAST, the chartplotter is your friend!

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Technically that wasn't GPS error -- it was GIGO error -- garbage in, garbage out. Nevertheless, he was over-reliant on the GPS, and didn't plot it on a chart, or probably, even look at a chart....

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

What GPS error? Most (can't speak about computer or tablet-based programs, although I just ordered a tablet and will be learning about it shortly) -- my Garmin seems to always match my paper chart. ...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Gotta have a backup. Went on a club cruise on someone else's boat when I first started sailing.

His chartplotter had a black screen. It was coming on but couldn't be read. He used DR to find the...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

Coral grows ... and sand shifts. Makes a great case for getting on the radio and gathering some local knowledge.

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

I zoom in, but at most resolutions, my chart plotter screen information is bigger than it is on the chart. I have a Garmin 441S.

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

But while developing those DR skills, comparing where you think you are with where you actually are is extremely useful.

It's a mistake to assume that all who have chart plotters either don't know...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

I'm not so sure everything can be reduced to numbers. Circumstances can change pretty quickly. Also on a long passage, won't you have multiple crew on watch? Will they all have that ability to reduce...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

I don't recall anyone saying you can manually mark the chart on a chart plotter. I have said multiple times that a paper chart should still be used and marked. Maybe that's where the confusion comes...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

One advantage would be that you could still zoom out for the big picture and then zoom in again for details. It reduces the number of times you have to whip your reading glasses out, and takes up a...

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

One of the best thing a chart plotter can do -- if you're not over-reliant on electrics -- is pinpoint things like drift and leeway. If you actually plot what you get from the chart plotter on to...

That's not what they do. There may be a computer program that does it, I don't know.

Re: Paper Charts Now Unnecessary

For me, it's a matter of making choices. I started sailing not five years ago, but four (I'm calendar-impaired!) -- and it's been about learning *useful* things -- for me. I don't have a bluewater...
