Re: Honda 2000 built in.

Btw. there are 2kw inverter gensets on the market which have factory built in electric AND as back up, manual start. Ours has...

Re: Honda 2000 built in.

Well, I guess the primary reason a lot of cruisers use the Honda instead of a marine genset is simply that there is no real marine alternative around 2kw for the same weight, reliability and, more...

Re: Honda 2000 built in.

Agreed Pete, neither is Carbomonoxide when deck mounted, or in a separate box.
Btw, tons of raceboats had or might still have them on board...

Re: Honda 2000 built in.

Actually the only reason in my eyes why one might want to install AND run a Honda or similar under deck or from within a box is the wish to run it as backup power source also in bad weather in case...

Re: Honda 2000 built in.

Most important is to run strong, explosion proof extracion fans for a few minutes before starting.
That will remove petrol fumes in the compartment before starting when installed properly.
Best...

Re: Honda 2000 built in.

Not sure about how insurance works in the US, but I guess if the source of an accident is directly related to the installation you might be right.

Still any other accident not directly related I...

Re: Honda 2000 built in.

We have a 2kw genset and use it for hot water and charging as we only have outboards.
To rely purely on a genset or even needing to run a genset to be able to cook sounds weird to me.

Use...

Re: Honda 2000 built in.

I am very much against overregulation.

Give people a chance to make their own mistakes and learn from them.
We do not need more of this nanny state behavior.
If I do have an accident on my boat...

Re: Honda 2000 built in.

Our box is simple fiberglass, epoxy, plywood and some heat insulation.
Still due to the ventilation issue (our box can not be bigger) we take the cover off when running the genny.

Re: Honda 2000 built in.

You need to run a powerful air in and extraction fan (both explosion proof) for few minutes before you start a petrol engine in a compartment.

Re: Honda 2000 built in.

@Cadence I kindly disagree

The pumps do not need anywhere near 2kw.
I'd appreciate an idea of how you came up with that assumption....

Apart from that Diesels are always way way more heavy...

Re: Honda 2000 built in.

Looks nice, but I actually doubt that ventilation is really adequate.
Especially if you are cruising in warm/tropical climate...
Unless you open the top when running it....

One more thought,...

Re: Honda 2000 built in.

Besides the extraction of fumes prior to starting, the extraction of hot air and enough cooling will be your primary issue.

If you ask why, well, been there done that.

These little 2kw air...

Re: Honda 2000 built in.

Here is our box.

Leaving the cover on when operating the genset is not an option due to the excess heat.205550

Re: Honda 2000 built in.

My 50cent.

We have a 2kw petrol engine which was fitted in the aft lazerette.

It has an electric starter, it's own starting battery was hooked into the charging circuit with a splitting diode....
