Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

Definitely not! Tell me WHY it won't work or is a bad idea, I'll listen with enthusiasm. Just saying "it won't work", or "too expensive", or "I don't like it" adds nothing to the topic without the...

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

Didn't bother reading the OP huh? "Him" approached "Me" to help "Him" build "His" boat..... the operative word being "Help"! He is in on the build and looking forward to it. He lacks the shop and the...

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

I'm thrilled that someone finally "gets it":thumb:

Don't forget, I'm NOT the one doing the loop (but I may in the future).... Building this boat IS enjoyment for me!

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

Perhaps, but in this case, building the boat is part of the adventure!

Any fool with a big enough checkbook can BUY a boat; it takes a SPECIAL type of fool to build his own!

^^^^ETA^^^^ I may...

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

Nope, never done the loop. Have been back and forth from FL to ME many times, been across Okeechobee enough to have a lot of lock experience. Many times on any of those trips I have seen alongside...

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

Comments are great.... Constructive comments that is.. Just to say "it can't be done" or "you are a fool" without amplifying reasons is not constructive in the least. Now if someone said that it...

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

Saving fees was never the intent! I went back and re-read the OP and realized the confusion "dockage"was intended to be "docking". Obviously autocorrect bit me on that one. YES, the primary intent...

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

So if the idea of folding is so impractical and will not last, tell me how all these sectional barges are still floating, or how do 30 year old Army bridge erection boats still remain functional?

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

In the telescoping hull, wouldn't there be a great loss of buoyancy? The beauty part of horizontal folding hulls is there is no loss of buoyancy; displacement never changes.

Another thought with...

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

Thanks! I guess that proves you can't always believe what you hear in a Key West bar! I had three guys tell me Sonny designed and built those boats on Stock Island.

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

Oh my! Naysayers abound!

Firstly the idea of the folding bows was born more of the desire for a smaller footprint in locks, seawalls, and slips; the expense factor (as in $/foot/night) was...

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

AT, I would think a loose fit would transmit a lot of noise as it worked.. Not good when anchoring at night. A rigid pin system as used in a sectional barge would be...

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

I would like to keep the draft minimal, as after the loop, the vessel will be based here in KW. There is a lot of great skinny water cruising in the keys. Slow speed maneuvering would be no worse...

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

Thanks Eric!
The metallurgy I have a good grip on, as I worked in a boatyard for years as a pup doing most of their welding and fabrication.

The stresses on the "hinge" would be large, and as I...

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

The boat in post 1 is cold molded ply/glass, and has been in service about 10-15 years as I recall.... I wonder if that would be doable if it were revisited on a hybrid basis... Making the...

Re: Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

Skoota is an interesting design! My buddy wanted metal for beaching.... "When you're grinding on rocks, nothing sounds better than steel!" (his words)

Also the folding concept is 100% easier out...

Build a Boat for The Great Loop?

I've been approached to build a boat for a friend specifically for the Great Loop. Over a few beers we decided on a powercat of modest dimensions. The overall design would be based on the Sunnydays...
