I like the concept of using a copper alloy. Of course brass would be avoided as it de-zincs easily (depending on alloy). My initial reaction is that copper is soft, but that would make it easy to...

You could replace the Formica with 3mm thick acrylic solid surface from Avonite - something I'm considering. Unfortunately they seem to only offer it in variations of white.
