In an emergency leaping to the helm and disconnecting the autopilot can be done pretty quickly, but requires some agility on our boat since we're usually not standing watch from the helm position....

Yes, however I don't know how that would have made a difference. The sectors for red and green are the same on a masthead light as on normal sidelights.
