Re: First keel sailboat for single hand learning?

Nice, but I don't like the old long keels. Most of them are modified keels with a rudder attached to the keel itself anyway. Get a heavy thick 50% of the hull fin keel and attach a rudder to it....

Re: First keel sailboat for single hand learning?

I feel as if the classes work after buying the eventual boat, so that the knowledge could be put into action right away. Also, some basic classes are valuable if they give privileges at sailing...

Re: First keel sailboat for single hand learning?

Nice one.

I don't follow anybody though. I just asked the sailors here about their first sailboat experience, which I don't have. In the end, I make my own decision in the light of what I want.

Re: First keel sailboat for single hand learning?

I know I've not given decent info about my future plans and sailing location. It's because I don't know the answers to those questions yet either. Long, long story... What I know is I'll move to the...

Re: First keel sailboat for single hand learning?

I heard they were well built and sail well regardless of the weather. Nice details.

Re: First keel sailboat for single hand learning?

Monohulls _/) Jboats
Catamarans _/) Seawind
Big fan of these boats. They make sense to me.

I would go with J/22 instead of J/24 or Cat22. Catalina 27 is something I would pass.

The classes...

Re: First keel sailboat for single hand learning?

The Sunfish, I think I'll sail the heck out of it.

So, what offshore sailing do you have in your mind? Are you going to do that in your Bristol?

Re: First keel sailboat for single hand learning?

I'll have nothing to lose with buying a Sunfish. It'll definitely teach me something about sailing, and I won't be breaking the bank.

Re: First keel sailboat for single hand learning?

You see, the second one considers a keel sailboat, the expenditures over here over there tend to pile up - and they pile up fast. Endless money pits. I wish to be able to keep those $s for the...

Still, there is some risk in that investment though nowadays.

Re: First keel sailboat for single hand learning?

So many places to find what I am looking for as soon as I know what I want. Seems as if both Sunfish / Laser and a small keel sailboat are good ways to start.

Re: First keel sailboat for single hand learning?

Yes, yes, Rhodes 19. I've already checked them out. A little pricey though, but why not - they seem to keep their value.

Re: First keel sailboat for single hand learning?

So, you bought a Bristol 27 after sailing a Nacra?

These are romantic sailboats. Beautiful.

However, I'd say, "How about a J/22 instead?"

Re: First keel sailboat for single hand learning?

Yes, Transom hung rudder will fine. Fractional or not, maybe...

3 cyl. Mirage - I won't haul anything with her. Also, a cheap dock is ideal, or I will get lazy. There are fixed fin keel options...

First keel sailboat for single hand learning?

I was planning to learn the ropes with something like a Sunfish. After the feedback I had had here, I decided to upgrade the plans. I want to start with a small keel sailboat with ballast now - a...
