Re: Two people dead after sailboat capsized
Please forgive during this somber discussion, but just a point of information here since the subject came up. Mousing is the closing off of the open part of a hook to keep whatever it is lifting in... |

Re: Two people dead after sailboat capsized
Meeting this criterion, I would suggest, means periodic inspecting and replacing of connecting items. I once lost control of the boom and mainsail after a controlled gybe but one where the swing arc... |

Re: Two people dead after sailboat capsized
Traveling down seas in even moderate ones that are arriving astern & slewing (yawing) the boat causes the boom to sway about as it loses then regains sail pressure. Trying to sail in that is tough.... |

Re: Two people dead after sailboat capsized
So counter-intuitive it would be to go below when it becomes clear that the boat will be driven ashore. Reminiscent of what we hear about how to handle stalled aircraft—i.e., to dive rather than to... |

Re: Two people dead after sailboat capsized
Just an antic that media uses to get you to click the pop-up ads of their sponsors, etc. A day or two later and it probably was not like that. |

Re: Two people dead after sailboat capsized
Yeah. I’ve heard a lot about the Oregon River bars when folks have been discussing the Pacific coast of North America. I’ve been looking at an Oregon coastal chart since this discussion began where I... |

Re: Two people dead after sailboat capsized
Actually, from the picture, the mainsail appears reefed, not completely furled, and an apparent storm jib appears to be up. Should be enough, one would think, to keep the boat moving in strong wind,... |

Re: Two people dead after sailboat capsized
I question whether a marked channel into a bay or harbor qualifies merely as an “inlet.” The entrance to Winchester (see #41), the Umpqua River channel, is marked with sea buoys and protected by... |

Re: Two people dead after sailboat capsized
Interesting speculation. The wife getting into a dinghy with the skipper over the side in "4-minute water", nobody at the helm and no thrust power, in 12-ft seas and blowing toward shore, getting... |

Re: Two people dead after sailboat capsized
Coast Pilot 10 reports the controlling depth of the bar at Nehalem at 4 ft. Chart reports breakers on both sides of the entrance and no ATON. But there is a bell buoy marking the entrance to... |
