Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

Or they have to go up to that foredeck in the conditions described when you can't furl the self-tacking jib from the cockpit in a force 6 so you go forward to release tension on the sheet up to the...

:popcorn:OP here: I was going to make it

Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

Having had similar experiences to Na Mara with a Hanse 415, I can say that the main was fully battened, with slab reefing (my preferred set-up), 7' bulb keel. One reef on a beam reach in a Force Six...

Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

Thanks for this post. Not that I didn't appreciate all the other opinions expressed and knowledge shared, but are the person I was waiting for when I wrote the original post, because the passage I am...

Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

Ah, Othetrees, I've been waiting for you. In a Hanse 415 and decent following seas, I've had trouble controlling the boat (in my avatar, Kira is caught off guard by a rather smallish 8-foot...

Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

The market has decided that people want boats that are fun to entertain on, fun to sail in fair coastal conditions, and comfy to live on. And I'm right there with them.

It's also, I think, why...

Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

So check this out:

There's a lot going on here. You have a variant of the reverse/wave-piercing/tumblehome bow.... really interesting sheer line, though I can't tell from this angle...
also a...

Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

That had occurred to me...this Hanse has a flat bottom and a deep bulb keel...again, great for performance sailing with that high aspect rig

good for hooking lobster buoys, too, if that's how you...

Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

Someone on the forum has a Southern Cross 35 for sale. I'd give it a look if I could get up to Ontario.

Pacific Seacraft is what I thought of, too, just looking at it. Not that I've been out in...

Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

You mean this Southern Cross 35? Mind elaborating?

After all, she's "a ruggedly built, double-ended cutter intended for blue water passage-making with safety, comfort, and speed."

I realize ...

Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

The Beneteau is having a better day.

Trust me, I love the way these boats look and sail. That's why I cruise them!

Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

I think these modern production cruisers are based on modern ocean racing boats, and designed to at least approximate their performance.

But those ocean racing boats are built for speed not...

Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

Keep in mind we're also talking about my anecdotal experience, sailing a lot of different boats. That's why I'm kind of hoping someone who has sailed Hanse in every kind of conditions speaks up.

Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

This is extremely true.

The only time I've had to go forward in a seaway was when I couldn't furl the jib from the cockpit in a strong breeze (small harbor; faces open ocean; needed to douse sails...

Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

Good points, all. Yours is a one-off if I recall correctly... it seems to me that all the popular production cruisers of this modern design have a similar build

What do you use for the protection?...

Shipped water is the issue that bothers me more. The boat I'm taking...
