Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

As long as you don't end up with chain piled on top of the anchor, I don't see any problem with that technique. It's pretty close to what I do, other than I usually power drop as I have a fairly...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

The Fortress / Danforth are less likely to pull out and reset or otherwise misbehave (vs rotating in place or staying put) when buried deeply in a soft substrate. I worry far more about that in...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

Possibly, but soft mud is also where nothing will match a Fortress / Danforth type, so I figure that I'll accept mediocre soft mud performance on the primary anchor if it's good at everything else...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

We don't have enough data to determine if a steady 22 lb difference is all it takes, or if that scales up and maintains the 2x difference. So unless someone comes up with that data, the only safe...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

You're also utterly incapable of reading anything that's being written here or understanding what the data means. IT DOES NOT MATTER if a crappy old anchor works as well as a new one when the old...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

Agreed. The biggest challenge comes at the smaller end of the spectrum. In my case, I'm using 5/16" G43 chain currently. Strength-wise, I could likely get away with 1/4" G70 (working load is...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

The Vulcan does have a significantly shorter shank than some of the rollbar options, so if that's one of the fit constraints, it'll definitely do better than some others.

The Vulcan scored ok,...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

I'll also agree with the Vulcan being a good, but not necessarily perfect choice. My 33kg / 73lb example has been a good performer, but it's not the top mark in the SV Panope testing. It definitely...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

Agreed. If I had to trade my Vulcan in for a Bruce and I needed to double the weight for equivalent performance, we'd have a problem. I'm pretty sure that a 150 lb Bruce won't even come close to...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

Or go for the Viking, which performs only slightly worse than the (much bigger) Bruce in the worst scenarios, but better in some despite the smaller size. Up-size the Viking to match the Bruce and...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

Shank length and such are all definitely factors in what fits or not. But once you get beyond fairly small boats, manhandling the anchor shouldn't be a concern, as you won't be able to manhandle any...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

That would be a more interesting comparison, I think. Determine how much the generational improvements can be offset by weight, vs what behaviors or performance limitations are inherent enough in...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

And there are generally fewer situations that make them not work. Plus, many of the newer designs are more tolerant of short scope than many of the older designs were, which can enable use of some...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

For those talking about a Danforth / Fortress, as much as other designs are somewhat comparable on a weight basis, the Danforth / Fortress is not as the design makes it so large for a given weight. ...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

Assuming he meant the 25kg Rocna (and not 25 lbs), I wouldn't say it's drastically too small, although I'd consider it bordering on undersized. I'd definitely be happier with the 33kg version on...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

If you look through all of the data from all of the videos the results for this are mostly there even though it wasn't directly tested.

Personally, I don't think it's an interesting test at all,...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

As mentioned before, Panope has tested different sizes of anchors. He's done a scaling test with at least the Bruce type to see if performance improves proportionately or disproportionately with...

Re: All modern anchors with loop, based on the Bugel are the same in performance

Larger size always helps performance significantly. I don't think that's been disputed. But different designs do show different performance weaknesses (although most of the modern designs are good...
