Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

This is definitely not in the cards just to paint the interior. Seems like it would be very difficult to get from the dock onto the boat as well.

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

Yes. Exacly what I'm saying. I get the corners now. Never did before.

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

Definitely. Have been using it where appropriate already. Thanks!

Used it where a flat, horizontal surface made of wood waterproofed with polyester joins the hull. As a gap filler.

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

The HVLP gun idea is a good one. What small, disposable, harbor freight compressor and HVLP Combo would someone recommend to spray small areas like a single room of a boat? Tiny jobs. I could do one...

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

@Buzzman.

Exactly! I’m an amateur woodworker at best. I’m not out to prove anything.

I just need results and to build an interior with a process that’s proven, repeatable, lightweight,...

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

Thank you very much for all these ideas. It’s quite helpful to understand a little more about some of these standardized techniques.

McHugh, It took 3 years to build a boat??? Or was that just...

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

That’s a pretty interesting idea actually. Very light weight and it seems like it would go up quickly. Acrylic is nice and shiny looking. Definitely some application for this. Especially in the...

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

Thank you, Matt. I think this might be the way I should go. It’s unfortunate I already bought a bunch of other materials.

If I use wood like this, what is the absolute best way to get a smooth and...

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

I would say I need more than one or two. It’s a completely empty hull on a 50 foot catamaran. LOL. Everything needs to be built. That’s like 50 sheets min.

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

I’m doing too many things at once. Sorry. Texting like 50 people at the same time. You’re right. I blew the math. I calculated as a 1 inch panel not a half inch.

Now that 15 pound version does...

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

I’m confused. I know of this as a heavy substance. It’s lightest variety 20 pounds per cubic foot. So, a 4 x 8 sheet of 1/2” Coosa is 2.6666 cubic feet of material.

Bluewater Panels...

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

That stuff is extremely heavy and doesn’t have a good surface. Not a good item to build cabinetry and interior of a boat out of. Especially a high-performance Catamaran. This has to be light weight....

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

I did start this way, but I used even thinner plywood. It was a little too thin. I think something in between 8th inch and a quarter inch might be the way to go. At least on vertical surfaces. Then...

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

This I have never heard of. It might be good. What is it made of? It’s not just polyester resin is it? With a filler? Like sprayable Bondo?

By the way, Bondo works extremely well for faring the...

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

Definitely. I’m looking for things like this. I have looked at taking Wilsonart or Formica and gluing it to foam. That’s not going as well as I would have hoped. What types of light weight premade...

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

Spraying Epoxy would probably kill me in 30 seconds flat. LOL

I can use polyester only.

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

Absolutely!!

What is that stuff? What are they using on RVs? That’s the thing. I don’t know any materials to use. People from Australia and New Zealand always have these amazing premade panels...

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

Couple of notes. It’s not just cabinets. It’s everything. I have to build the entire interior. It’s empty inside. Vanity, doors, steps, extra bulkheads where there is some sort of partition needed,...

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

I have use tons of half inch okoume marine plywood. It makes up the single hull bulkheads in my boat. The weight was the same as making up fiberglass/foam flat panels, so I just coated them in epoxy...

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

Isn’t that the truth? That’s exactly where I’m trying to get to. Now that I have a little time out here on the Monohull In cooler temperatures where my brain works, doing easy tasks instead of...

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

You know, I don’t normally have the band with to watch a bunch of videos, but I do at this time. Good idea. Maybe there is some techniques here that I can adapt. Thank you.

Re: Getting a perfect surface with wood?

OK, thanks. I will take a look at this stuff. I was not aware of a sanding sealer before. That is new to me. I don’t know anything about working with wood. I’m getting very frustrated in general with...

Getting a perfect surface with wood?

Doing interior things, on the catamaran, may have to be done in wood in some areas.

If you are building say, a bookcase out of plywood, how do you get perfect surfaces for paint? And make it in...
